Prograf (tacrolimus) is a medicine prescribed to intentionally lower the defense mechanism of the immune system. Although we need the immune system to fight off infections sometimes it can cause problems – when a transplant is rejected because it is construed as an invader. Prograf is prescribed in combination with other drugs to prevent rejection of transplants, including heart, kidney and liver transplants. Long-term treatment with this medicine increases the risk or developing certain types of cancer. Before taking Prograf you need to talk to your doctor to make sure the benefits outweigh potential risks.
The side effect you may experience include nausea, vomiting, mild rash, itching skin, swelling in the feet or hands, loss of appetite, stomach pain, insomnia. This medicine increases the sensitivity of your skin and has been reported to interact with a wide number of other drugs. Tell your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter drugs you are currently taking to prevent drug interaction. Prograf can also have a dangerous interaction with grapefruit juice and other products in which it is used. Some people who were taking this medicine after a kidney transplant have been reported to develop diabetes. Discuss with your doctor your individual risk of developing diabetes when taking Prograf.
